US branded dirtiest web hosting nation

Sophos report warns that US hosters need to clean up their act Experts at security firm Sophos have branded the US as the "dirty man of the web world" after new research from the vendor identified the country as the top host of infected sites.

Over a third of the world's infected sites are hosted in the US, ahead of Russia with 12.8 per cent and China with 11.2 per cent, according to the Sophos Security Threat Report 2010 (PDF). The UK came tenth with 1.6 per cent.

The report covers malicious sites deliberately set up to lure victims with " promises of desirable or salacious content", and the more recent trend of infecting legitimate sites with malware via SQL injection or other attacks, said Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley.

"Webmasters need to take much better care of their sites, ensuring that they are securely coded and properly patched against hackers injecting malicious software into their pages," he wrote in a blog post.

"Meanwhile, all computer users should be protected by a security solution that scans every webpage visited, and every link clicked on, to see if it could contain dangerous content. You scan your email for viruses, and you should do the same for web sites."

Skali Sees 20 Per Cent Growth In Web Hosting Revenue

Skali Group, an e- Business specialist, expects a 20 per cent growth in web hosting revenue with the launch of new web hosting brand EmbunWeb.com on Wednesday.

Skali President and Co-founder Aimi Aizal Nasharuddin said EmbunWeb was poised to attract more local small and medium entrepreneurs to craft larger presence in the market as well as strengthen marketing strategy.

"EmbunWeb can provide opportunities for entrepreneurs to learn more about information technology and marketing strategies especially among Bumiputera entrepreneurs," he told reporters after the launch ceremony here.

He said the new web hosting product was expected to be the main driver for the growth of the company's core business especially with the rising number of entrepreneurs using the internet as their business platform.

Last year, Skali recorded RM4.6 million in revenue from the web hosting business and experienced about 10 per cent growth.

Presently, web hosting accounted for 20 to 30 per cent of the company's total revenue, Aimi said.

He expected the new web hosting product to register 4,000 domains by year-end.

Beside EmbunWeb, the company planned to launch one or two other products this year, Aimi said.
